France And Now

Long time readers may remember that we covered the announcement of a French company, Synapse Medicine, launching their Medication Reconciliation and Pharmacovigilance solutions in the US. I always find it exciting when the US can benefit from technology and solutions that are already having an impact internationally. At the HIMSS 2022 conference, I was able to sit down with Dr. Clement Goehrs, MD-PhD, CEO & Co-Founder Synapse Medicine , to learn more about their solutions and their expansion into the US.

Talking with Dr. Goehrs, I learned that while there are fundamental differences between healthcare in France and the US, the need and process for medication reconciliation was very similar. This reality was a big reason why Synapse Medicine wanted to bring their solution to the US. They’d benefited many of the best healthcare organizations in France and they wanted to provide those same benefits to US health systems.

Plus, Dr. Goehrs shares why medication reconciliation is such a hard problem to solve. It’s full of challenges and requires a lot of time for the pharmacist to do it right. However, when you apply the right technology, Synapse Medicine has proven that they can go from 1 hour to do medication reconciliation to under 15 minutes. Plus, Dr. Goehrs found that many pharmacists were having to use multiple tools to do the reconciliation. Synapse Medicine brings all of the information together from across multiple systems in one single tab that helps them do it more efficiently and effectively.

Dr. Goehrs also shared with us about their pharmacovigilance technology named “Medication Shield” and the impact it’s having on drug prescribing in France. The problem France faced was that there were hundreds of ways that side effects were recorded. To address this challenge, Medication Shield goes through all these free text side effects and using AI were able to identify what side effects were being described by the patient so they could categorize them properly and identify potential harmful side effects.
