Title of Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Med Surg









Job Description: Med Surg nurses provide care and treatment to ill, injured, and recovering adults. The medical-surgical nurse must be able to assess patient condition, administer medications, change dressings, monitor vital signs, keep records, and provide patients with support and education. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med Surg Nurses include consulting and coordinating with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. Preparing and administering (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and recording prescribed medications. Med Surg nurses report adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse. The Med Surg nurse is also responsible for educating patients on surgical procedures, recording patients’ medical information and vital signs and monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment used on patients, and interpreting and recording electronic displays. The Med Surg nurse must initiate corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology and provide bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients. The Med Surg nurse must also initiate a patient education plan, as prescribed by physician which teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining post-treatment home care needs. The Med Surg nurse changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs, prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient, responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol and participates in discharge planning.

Qualifications:

• An Associate Degree, Diploma in Nursing, or BSN is required for the RN Med Surg (will consider 6 months exp in LTAC LTC for med surg)
• Current state licensure is required
• The RN Med Surg must have BLS Certification
