General Summary:
The Data Technician will promote the use of district technologies to support student achievement in the PK-12 classrooms. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation of devices and systems in use throughout the district. The Data Technician reports to the Database Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to manage PowerSchool SIS, MI DataHub, ClassLink Roster Server, and rostering district approved Curriculum resources.
- Collaborate with appropriate instructional and technical staff to support, manage, and optimize the use of hardware, software, databases, and network to support quality teaching and learning.
- Maintains local and wide area networking equipment and configurations.
- Builds and collaborates relationships with regional and national service providers, including Northwest Education Services, Northwestern Michigan College, Michigan Department of Education, PowerSchool, Microsoft, Google, etc.
- Provides support for all technology products and services. Support may include answering questions, troubleshooting problems, teaching or instructing staff regarding software or hardware functionality, and communicating policy.
- Records required customer and problem information in our work order system.
- Provides “help desk” support for internal and external access issues.
- Elevates complex and/or high priority problems to the appropriate support groups for resolution.
- Develops and maintains documentation for all technological systems within their assigned locations.
- Helps maintain the data warehouse and data flows to support district instructional goals.
- Uses automation to improve the process of existing procedures using data flows or data integrity checks.
- Assures proper communication between connected systems.
- Creates new data views and reports for various systems.
- Supports SIS and Gradebook users across the district.
- Trains and supports users of data systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Associate's degree or equivalent with previous experience and/or training with a variety of hardware, software, and networking devices; or other equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
- Excellent organizational skills with emphasis on details and time management.
- Ability to communicate effectively including listening, speaking, and writing skills.
- Ability to develop and manage databases and connections between disparate systems.
- Experience in T-SQL required; SSIS, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle experience preferred.
- Ability to read, interpret data, and present data in a meaningful and useful format.
- Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to analyze, organize, and improve the efficiency of data systems.
- Advanced knowledge of troubleshooting techniques on PC, networking, and networking protocols including TCP/IP.
- Ability to research solutions or information regarding technical issues.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
- Ability to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and utilize various tools involved in the installation of computer equipment and properly operate required office equipment
- Required to transport items weighing up to 50 pounds and must hold a valid driver's license.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the office.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- The person in this position needs to be able to move about the office setting, including stooping or crouching to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Regular use of computer and other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.)
- The ability to listen and effectively communicate, both written and orally, information and ideas to a diverse population.
- Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
- Occasionally moves boxes and office supplies weighing up to 50 lbs across the office for various needs.
- Ability to drive to various locations throughout the district.
Environmental Conditions:
This is a largely sedentary assignment, with most of the duties performed on a computer or phone in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Work Schedules:
Must be available for on-call work, including overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday, when necessary.
