Rooted Teen Program Leader (Seasonal)
Reports to: Education Manager
Full Time, Seasonal
Pay Rate: $18 per hour
Position Summary:
The Rooted Teen Program Leader, affectionately known as the “Crew Leader’’ by
the youth, is responsible for our teen job training program, Rooted. They work
closely with the Education Manager and Farm Team to deliver meaningful and
engaging programming.
Rooted is a seven-week employment training program for high school age youth
who are interested in learning more about the food system and how they can play a
role in affecting change. Crew Members work on our fifteen-acre organic farm and
participate in workshops to develop a knowledge base of sustainable farming and
food systems, as well as develop leadership and cooking skills. For many youth, it is
a first job: working in a crew of ten, youth gain invaluable skills of teamwork,
accountability, civic participation, and communication.
We are looking for a Rooted Teen Program Leader who is dedicated to
empowering youth and improving their teaching practice. They should have some
experience with gardening, farming, and earth-based sciences. The ideal candidate
is an excellent multitasker, patient, fun-loving, and confident in their ability to
motivate and assist youth in learning new skills and exploring a growing
environment. This position is an ideal space to explore experiential education or
hone your teaching skills, we are committed to the professional development of
our Rooted Teen Program Leader.
This seasonal full-time position runs Monday through Friday, working outside for
8 hours a day, June 20- August 24. Our Rooted program runs 7 weeks, July 5-
August 19, with two weeks of training at the beginning and three days of debriefing
at the end. Must be available for the entire length of the program.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Program Delivery
● Execution of Rooted at Carnation Farms
o Lead and mentor a diverse group of ten youth
o Lead and participate in daily farm field work
o Learn, develop and deliver Rooted curriculum, content, and
expectations
o Responsible for youth safety and wellbeing in all settings, including
group activities, on-farm fieldwork, and community outreach
o Foster a collaborative, respectful, and comfortable environment for
youth
o Ensure Carnation Farms’ and Rooted-specific program standards are
consistently upheld
o Receive and act upon weekly feedback and guidance from Education
Manager
● Embody and represent Carnation Farms’ mission
o We are a group on a mission to change the food system, and we are
looking for others who are just as passionate about it, too.
o Rooted is a key forward facing program for Carnation Farms. The
Rooted Teen Program Leader is asked to speak about the importance
of this program through interactions with our community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Education:
● Leadership experience in educational or summer programs with adolescent
youth required
● 1+ years of undergraduate study in Education, Environmental/Agricultural
Education, or a related field preferred
Key Competencies:
● Outstanding leadership and organizational skills, with a great sense of
humor
● Demonstrated experience motivating, fostering individual potential,
building trusted relationships, and interacting effectively and appropriately
with teens
● Genuine love of working with youth
● Interest in farming, food systems, teambuilding, and community service
● Self-starter with excellent communication skills and problem-solving
abilities
● Comfortable with holding youth accountable and professionally managing
conflicts between youth
● Adaptable in accomplishing a variety of tasks at the same time
● Personable and relatable
● Ability to perform demanding physical farm labor, including working
outdoors in a myriad of temperatures for 8 hours a day, and lifting 50
pounds.
● Ability to maintain a positive attitude and morph any experience into a
learning opportunity
● Must be qualified and comfortable driving a large van and transporting
youth
● Ability to comply with Carnation Farms Farm Camps COVID-19 policies
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
● Valid driver’s license
● Background check
● CPR/First Aid Certification

aren’t previously certified.
