King & Spalding, a leading global law firm, is currently seeking a Associate Director of Human Resources ("AD") to join the Washington, DC office.  The Associate Director of Human Resources is responsible for the implementation and administration of the firm’s human resource policies, procedures, and practices in the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Charlotte, NC offices.  Further, the AD supports the Director of Administration ("DA") with the day-to-day operations of the Washington, DC and Northern Virginia offices in his/her absence.  The AD is expected to lead by example and promote a positive work environment that encourages teamwork and personal development and to administer various human resources plans and procedures for all office personnel.

Essential job functions of the Associate Director of Human Resources:

  • In the DA’s absence, provides guidance to the WDC, NVA and CHA office administrative functional areas (including mentoring, advising, coaching, counseling, and mediating) and foster a service-oriented culture.
  • Keeps the CHRO and DA informed of operational issues and HR initiatives.
  • Works with the DA to coordinate between the WDC, NVA, and CHA offices’ managers to achieve a balance between supporting the lawyers’ specific needs and providing consistent practices.
  • Supports the DA in the preparation of the annual office budgets, manages HR expenses to budget, and provides routine reporting and recommendations. Approves local invoices for payment and petty cash disbursements in the DA’s absence.
  • Participates in the annual business services team performance reviews and compensation administration with the CHRO and DA.
  • Oversees the coordination of office social events, staff appreciation events, etc.
  • Ensures consistency with employment policies and legal compliance including ADA, FMLA, Wage and Hour, Visa and Immigration Laws.
  • Supervises the Human Resources team, who support the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Charlotte offices’ personnel.
  • Provides guidance on the legal aspects of hiring, including INS regulations, reference checking, screening of resumes, and preliminary interviews.
  • Manages the establishment of fee agreements, including the fee structure for temporary and permanent placements, and actively liaises with employment agencies.
  • Manages the recruiting for non-lawyer personnel, ensuring that all requests for replacement personnel are approved prior to recruitment efforts.
  • Oversees/performs the background and reference check processes for applicants being considered for employment.
  • Oversees the onboarding and off-boarding processes for lateral partners, attorneys and support staff. Takes a lead role with the onboarding of lateral partners with the HR Manager leading the non-partner and business services’ onboarding.
  • Communicates benefits plans and programs to the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Charlotte employees, including open enrollment programs. Assists in resolving employee benefit problems with the Employee Benefits Department.
  • Oversees reporting and resolution of all Workers Compensation claims with assistance from HR Manager-WDC, NVA & CHA. Reports all Workers Compensation claims, files claim information as required, follow-up on claims and researches problems. Manages claims with assistance of worker's compensation carrier, case managers and the Employee Benefits Department.
  • Oversees the offices’ participation in salary surveys on a regular basis to ensure the firm maintains competitive pay practices. Analyzes survey results and recommends market adjustments if needed. 
  • Keeps the DA and CHRO informed of significant ongoing personnel issues in the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Charlotte offices. Investigates employee complaints and develops recommendations to resolve personnel matters.
  • Oversees administration and management of FMLA, DCFMA, and STD policies for respective offices with assistance from the HR Manager-WDC & NVA.
  • Performs ad-hoc duties as assigned by the DA and/or CHRO.​

Successful candidates must possess strong oral and written communication skills; demonstrated leadership skills in areas such as organizing, problem-solving, planning and decision-making; deep experience in all disciplines of human resource management with familiarity with finance, facilities, etc.  Must have knowledge of all pertinent employment laws and a thorough knowledge of federal, state and city regulations.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with firm personnel at all levels. Must possess the ability to counsel with employees, demonstrating confidentiality and resourcefulness.

BA or BS degree in either Human Resources Management or Business Management; advanced degree preferred.  Experience in Human Resources management for a minimum of ten (10) years required. Experience with Immigration visa processing highly preferred.
