Department Overview
The Lung Cancer Screening Nurse Navigator will work collaboratively with the Radiology, Pulmonary, Thoracic Surgery, and Knight Cancer Institute faculty experts and their interdisciplinary teams. The nurse navigator coordinates the care for the patient prior to the patient’s first lung cancer screening consult visit at OHSU. This position will work with the clinical nurse manager and other ambulatory oncology nurse navigators to develop standard metrics, identify patient barriers, coordinate smooth transitions of care, and to be available for team members in gathering data for new patients that will allow the team to create a plan of care for the patient through the work up phase of screening.
The Lung Cancer Screening Nurse Navigator at OHSU is a professional RN with prevention, screening, and oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individual assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to ensure screening adherence, education, and outreach. Using the nursing process, the nurse navigator provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision-making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care as they approach their screening visit and follow-up.
This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for all lung cancer screening navigated patients and will conduct comprehensive hand-off care (verbally and in EMR documentation) to providers and nurses assuming care of the patient after imaging, if needed. The nurse navigator interfaces with research staff, and works to identify patients who may be suitable candidates for clinical trials.
The Nurse Navigator will manage and be responsible for creating and collaborating with other departments as part of program development and to create education and outreach materials for patients and providers seeking lung cancer screening. This includes, but not limited to, CME events, community-focused events, marketing activities, etc. At minimum, the Nurse Navigator will be responsible for reporting out on program goals, be up to date on guidelines and evidence-based literature, and ensuring quality and regulatory needs of the program are met.

Department Specific Requirements:
Requires three years of nursing experience including:
- Minimum two years oncology, including solid tumor, nursing experience required
- Prefer oncology ambulatory nursing care coordination experience
- Experience working in a high volume, fast-paced setting
- Demonstrated high levels of independence, flexibility, and problem solving abilities
- Compassion, empathy and assertiveness to advocate for patients’ needs
- Demonstrated ability to accurately and efficiently review, prioritize, and manage large volumes of clinical data

Required Qualifications
Current BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application). BLS/ACLS must not expire during orientation or probation period (upload documentation with online application) •Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) •Current OHSU employees/Internal applicants: Associate's Degree in Nursing, BSN preferred •Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License •Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools •Ability to lift, bend, stoop, reach, carry, push, pull and walk throughout the work period. Able to lift 35 lbs. independently. Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer oncology ambulatory nursing care coordination experience
- Prefer prior experience in lung cancer, thoracic surgery and/or pulmonology
- Demonstrated ability to take a leading role in developing a new developing a new position to include: Developing systems to track trends in patient barriers to care and collaborating with the team to create customized workflows to improve patient outcomes
- Prefer experience with telephone triage in oncology, thoracic surgery and/or pulmonology
- OCN or AONN preferred.
- Current OHSU employees: BSN preferred
