General Summary:

Works closely with internal and external partners (e.g., 3GPP, 1M2M, 5GAA) to improve and evolve industry technical standards while representing Qualcomm as a delegate in standardization forums. Work with attorneys to file patents that protect the novel IP aspects of the proposed inventions. 

We seek a 3GPP System Engineer with demonstrated experience in wireless system design and standardization, with a focus on 5G performance definition and 3GPP RAN4 standards.

The candidate is expected to develop written technical contributions, give high quality presentations of them in 3GPP, work to obtain consensus, proactively promote Qualcomm wireless technologies, and protect Qualcomm's interest in the emerging areas. The candidate is also expected to evaluate technical proposals from other companies and assess them through the lens of Qualcomm’s priorities.

The candidate will  work closely with other members of the 3GPP RAN standards team and with research and product teams in both the baseband and RF areas to ensure the company goals are being promoted. The candidate should be able to operate in autonomy, assessing and justifying prioritization of engagement for Qualcomm in projects and industry initiatives.  The candidate must be able to quickly adapt, respond, and make decisions in real-time.

Attendance to 3GPP RAN4 and RAN Plenary is an essential part of the job.  Consequently, once 3GPP physical meetings resume, the candidate is expected to be available to travel frequently for week-long meetings, on average 8 week-long meetings per year are to be expected, uniformly distributed between Europe, North America and Asia. While 3GPP meetings are operated virtually, the candidate is expected to actively participate in the electronic version of RAN4 and RAN Plenary meetings

The candidate will operate in collaboration with different business units within the company, including multiple research projects, multiple product groups, and regulatory groups. The candidate will work in an exciting environment with a team of some of the brightest systems engineers in the industry and will have frequent interaction with other engineering disciplines.

Qualification:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.

• 5+ years Systems Engineering or related work experience.

Preferred Education Requirements

• PhD, Masters or equivalent mix of education and experience, in a field related to communications, preferable wireless (cellular) communications.

Skills/ Experience

• Solid understanding of wireless radio technology principles. In particular, a solid knowledge of the NR physical layers and of NR features is required

• Experience in standardization working groups is essential

• Experience in wireless system design and evaluation is essential

• Experience in wireless system performance evaluation is a plus

• A good understanding of end to end system design is a plus

• A good understanding of key business concepts and being able to relate this to various business strategies for both Qualcomm and others in the industry is also

• Experience with cellular infrastructure design or modem/RF design and development is a plus

 
Additional Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills is required.

• Candidate should highlight any experience as an editor, rapporteur or chair of standards bodies.
