Description:

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) provides grants, professional opportunities, education enrichment, other programs and services to individuals and nonprofit organizations in all communities within the District of Columbia. The Arts Commission is supported primarily by District government funds and in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. DC Act A23-0091 restructured the CAH as an independent agency and established new appointed members of the CAH. Arts includes music, vocal music, dance, drama, folk art, creative writing, architecture and allied fields, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic and craft arts, industrial design , costume and fashion design, media and film and sound recording. Humanities includes the study of ancient or modern languages, literature, philosophy, history, human geography, archeology, jurisprudence, religion, laws, ethics, the history, criticism, theory and practice of the arts and aspects of social sciences that have humanistic concept. Commission membership:

The Commission shall consist of 18 members appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Council, in accordance with § 1-523.01 (e) of the Confirmation Act of 1978. Each member appointed to the Commission shall be a District resident who has displayed an interest or an ability in the arts or humanities or has been active in the furtherance of the arts and humanities in the District of Columbia

CAH MEMBERSHIP

Each member appointed to the Commission shall be a person who has displayed an interest or an ability in 1 of the various fields of the arts or humanities and/or has been active in the furtherance of the arts or humanities in the District of Columbia. Members shall be appointed to ensure that they are representative of all the various geographic areas and neighborhoods within the District of Columbia. The Commission will include the following members:

APPOINTED IN 2019

  • Two (2) members with specific interest, ability or experience in the humanities.
  • Two (2) members with specific interest, ability or experience in arts or humanities education
  • Two (2) members with specific interest, ability or experience in theatre and performing arts.

APPOINTED IN 2020

  • One (1) member with specific interest, ability or experience in public art
  • Two (2) members with specific experience in arts or humanities organizational administration or governance.
